Suns Shine in DAC Opener

LANCASTER, Texas – Dallas College Cedar Valley women's basketball team beat 11th-ranked Dallas College Mountain View 102-55 Thursday night in the Dallas Athletic Conference opener. 

Cedar Valley's 102 points marked a season high as the Suns won their fourth straight game to run their record to 7-9 overall, 1-0 in the DAC. All four of those wins have come after the holiday break.  

Tynia Minnitt scored a season-high 26 points, and had eight assists, seven rebounds, six steals and a block. She was 9 of 18 from the floor, and knocked down all four three-pointers she attempted. Karys Oubre buried seven 3-pointers to finish with 21 points, coupled with her four steals and three assists. Breanna Sharp had 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting, 10 rebounds and three steals. It was her second double-double of the season. 

Cedar Valley, which is receiving votes in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III poll, sprinted to a 24-10 lead in the first quarter. By halftime, the Suns led 48-26. They scored 24 or more points in each of the four periods.  

The Suns connected on 36 field goals, matching their season high, which came in the season opener at San Antonio College. They shot 42.4 percent from floor, the highest since shooting 50 percent in that win at San Antonio Nov. 1. They canned a season-high 14 triples, shooting 43.8 percent from beyond the 3-point arc.  

Thamerin Balthazar scored 17 points, and had five steals, while shooting 7 of 12. Cyncere McDonald had 12 points, seven rebounds and five steals. She was 6 for 10 at the free throw line. 

Mountain View's Aundrea Bradley had 18 points, 10 rebounds, a block and a steal. She was 6 of 9 from the floor. Jourdan Jones scored 12 points, going 8 for 12 from the free throw line. Alexis Simpson finished with nine points and 12 rebounds. She was 7 for 10 at the free throw line. 

The Lions (5-10, 0-1) sank 26 of 37 free throws for 70.3 percent. The Suns were 16 of 25 for 64 percent.

Cedar Valley had a season-high 29 steals. Mountain View matched Cedar Valley with 32 rebounds.

It was the first time the Suns reached 100 points since scoring 103 in a victory over Mountain View in 2023-24. Earlier that season, they put up a season-high 112 in a win over Dallas College Richland.  

The Suns are scheduled to host No. 12 Dallas College Richland (5-8, 0-0) 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2.
