Cedar Valley Wins Big in First Game Back

KEENE, Texas – Dallas College Cedar Valley women's basketball team beat Southwestern Adventist University 88-32 Wednesday night in its return from the holiday break. 

It was the Suns' first game in a month.

Cedar Valley, which is receiving votes in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III rankings, outscored Southwestern Adventist 27-7 in the first quarter, and never looked back. The Suns (4-9) led 49-17 at halftime. 

Cedar Valley shot 66.7 percent in the second quarter. The Suns buried a season-high 13 three-point field goals. Thamerin Balthazar was 6 of 12 from the 3-point line, and finished with a season-high 28 points and eight rebounds. Her six triples were also a season high. Karys Oubre had 14 points, five rebounds and five steals for the Suns. She was 6 of 12 from the floor. Tynia Minnitt had nine points, eight assists and seven steals. Janessa Rodriguez scored eight points. 

Desiree Fields had 11 points and eight boards for Southwestern Adventist, which fell to 2-8. Abby Valero had 10 points and five rebounds for the Knights.

Balthazar canned a triple at the 2:37 mark in the first period, giving Cedar Valley a 10-point lead. The Suns scored the next 10 points in the quarter, with ShaTarria Dowell coming up with a steal and layup 24 seconds before the buzzer to extend the lead to 20. Breanna Sharp hit a 3-pointer at the 5:48 mark in the second quarter to make it 34-10. Dowell scored on an assist from Minnitt 2:26 before halftime to push the lead to 43-12. Rodriguez canned a triple on a dish from Kyla To with 48 seconds left in the half to cap a 6-2 run.

Cedar Valley hit eight field goals in both the first and second quarters, while limiting Southwestern Adventist to seven total in the first half. The Suns outscored the Knights 39-15 in the second half, shooting 40 percent from the floor in the final period. Balthazar had eight points in the fourth quarter, and Oubre added six.

The Suns outrebounded the Knights 52-21. Cyncere McDonald had a season-best 11 boards. Sharp had seven.

Cedar Valley will host Arlington Baptist University Junior Varsity 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
