DALLAS – Dallas College Cedar Valley's women's soccer team beat ninth-ranked Dallas College Richland, 2-1, Friday night to open Dallas Athletic Conference play.
It was Cedar Valley's first win over Richland since Sept. 24, 2010. The Suns had two forfeit victories over the Thunderducks in 2011.
The Suns took a 1-0 lead Friday in the 15th minute when Karina Rivera converted a feed from Lilianna Tapia. It was one of seven shots for the Suns in the first half.
Cedar Valley extended its lead to 2-0 in the second half when Victoria Hernandez found the back of the net on another assist from Tapia.
Richland's Linzy Villa scored with four minutes remaining, but the Suns held on to win.
Cedar Valley goalkeeper Serena Aldana (1-1-0) stopped five shots in the first half to earn her first victory. Olivia Reyna made eight saves in the second half to preserve the win.
The Suns finished with 16 shots, seven on goal.
Cedar Valley (3-1-0, 1-0-0 DAC) will host Dallas College Brookhaven (2-2-1, 0-0-1) at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the first league home game.
